The Reidsville Police Department and the Secretary of State’s Office conducted a counterfeit compliance check Thursday at 12 local retail stores. Ten of the stores were in compliance.

Counterfeit merchandise for sale was found at Lovewig on South Scales Street and Hammers Mart on North Scales Street. An investigation at Lovewig on South Scales Street found counterfeit jewelry, wallets, handbags, scarves, wallets and belts, worth about $5,000, according to police. No charges were filed.

The total value of the items at Hammers Mart, consisting of 65 counterfeit pieces of jewelry and key chains, is about $200, according to Reidsville police. The Secretary of State issued a cease and desist warning to the violators and police issued a verbal warning.
