Bibleway Day Care Center responsible for boy left alone

Bibleway Church Day Care Center has been identified as the day care center responsible for leaving a 3-year-old boy behind at a Danville movie theater in July.

A representative of the Virginia Department of Social Services released the name of the day care center on Wednesday.

Marianne McGhee, director of public affairs for the Department of Social Services, said the inspections division handled the first part of the investigation. She said details of the investigation are still being kept confidential until the administrative side of the investigation is complete.

McGhee said “sanctions are likely” when the administrative phase of the investigation is completed.

“We can’t discuss it in more detail at this point,” she said. “Due diligence must be completed before we’re ready to discuss it in an official capacity.”

The boy was found alone at Danville Stadium Cinemas after a morning movie showing on July 15 that included groups of children from local day care centers, Danville police said.

Theater employees called Danville police at about 11 a.m. after discovering the boy had been left alone. Authorities then called Social Services, which took custody of the child.

The boy’s parents were reunited with their child later that day, police said.

Rose Cain, administrator of the day care center at Bibleway, and the Rev. Larry Campbell, co-assistant pastor of Bibleway Cathedral and a member of Danville City Council, both declined to comment on the situation Wednesday. Campbell said calls about the incident should be directed to the bishop of the church.

Bishop Lawrence Campbell, pastor of the church, did not return a phone call Wednesday seeking comments.

Icould not believe the things people are writting about the Campbells , but most of all the one from (3mommy). After all this man has done and is continuing to do; not only for the members of his church, but for any one that comes in with needs.Everyone is intitled to their own oppion but at lease get the facts first. My son was five, he went to slept on the school bus and was taken back to where they parked the bus, he was handicap. But when I found him I was like the family of that little boy, glad the Lord had kept him safe and that I found him. I don’t know the facts, but i do know he was not left ther intentionlly. I have 14 granchildren,we try to take them all to church on Sunday, so we take two vans. One Sunday after we got home, one was missing, we had left him at church. We didn’t do this on purpose. I thought he was in the van with my husband, who had brought him and my husband thought he had decided to ride with me. But thank God he was safe, and my daughter-in-law didn’t blame us. GOD BLESS YOU THE CAMPBELL’S.IT’S ONLY A TEST. CONTIUE IN THE LORD

I agree with the last writer that leaving a child behind is totally unacceptable—you cant blame low wages for this bc Im a public school teacher and if I did the same on a field trip—I would be “history”—-
always excuses when it comes to someone else’s child—
Very lucky the child was found safe -
I wouldnt want to trust my child’s safety in the hands of “luck”——

i know mistakes can happen, but leaving a child behind on any kind of trip is unacceptable.this is a mistake that should never have happened .you would thought that the church would admit a mistake was made, and put a system in place that this wouldnt happen again.

I would like to thank Bibleway Daycare and it’s staff for the wonderful job it has done in watching over my grandchildren. That daycare has been a blessing to this community and will always continue to do so. Isn’t it strange how we can do good for years and years, but when we make one mistake all of the good is forgotten.I commend each and every person that’s employed there and to let you know, you have my support. My grandchildren have attended other facilities, but it was something special about the staff at Bibleway Daycare that made my grandchildren feel so special to the point that when I would pick them up, they didn’t want to leave. Keep up the good work.

Why wasn’t this information revealed at the time of the incident. It smells of a cover-up. What a shock.

I would like to comment in support of the daycare.  My two daughters (11 &7;) have attended Bibleway Daycare for the past 5 years.  There has not been ONE TIME where I thought they were not getting the care they needed.  They didn’t attend this summer b/c they were with their grandparents and they were truly depressed about that.  They asked everyday “when are they going to daycare”.  They knew that Bibleway always had fun activities for them to do.  A playground doesn’t make a facility capable.  My children had a ball riding their skates and running around playing with their friends.  Besides, the daycare is stocked with in-house playground equipment and computers.  Bibleway has gone out of their way to pick my children up from the school they attended, which was out of their district, every day for the past 5 years.  They also saw to it that the girls completed their homework and assisted them in doing it when necessary.  Bibleway Daycare also has a tutoring program which my oldest daughter benefited from and her grades showed it.  The staff always have treated every child there with loving care (and you know how some kids can be).  I’ve witnessed it myself.  Bishop, Phillip, and Larry Campbell make regular visits to the daycare and my children LOVE that. Yes, it was a terrible mistake and I’m sure people are going to do what they always do and that’s be negative and critical but we are all human.  I’m sure I’d be upset if that was my child but I wouldn’t let that one instance erase away the care they have given to my kids over the years.  My son is just a baby right now, but when he’s of age you best believe that he will attending BIBLEWAY DAYCARE!

I understand the responsibility of upper management/owners. However we must not assume that decreased pay and the facility layout is the reasoning for this incident. This is an error of everyone! We must take responsibility. These children went to the movies and the staff did not realize that someone was missing. What are the policies of trips? Who was supervising these children? How come no one too count before departing. These are NOT errors on the management directly. Again I say directly because as a manager I am at fault for my staff. But the other issues that a person may have with the facility layout and management has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Let me just say this. This daycare’s practices are somewhat questionable. It had its good and bad points, which is why I removed my children.  However, with ALL the money the church has, the daycare has gone down considerably. The staff is underpaid, there was hardly enough food (my kids were always hungry) and they take the kids out on a blacktop to play. Why? Because the playground, or at least how it was a couple of years ago, was a complete travesty.  But with all the money this church organization has… I’m sorry, but it is evident that the “powers that be” tends to neglect this daycare. It looks cast away and thrown aside. Eventually, this was going to filter down and impact somebody’s child. Thank God this child was found safe. However, I am not surprised. Once upon a time, this daycare was a very special place. How do I know? I went there myself as a child. It seems as if now that the church has grown more, the daycare is just a formality. As for the staff, I do believe that their heart is in the right place. Bottom line: The Campbells could and should have done better.

Would anybody really expect Campbell to have any comment? Somebody really messed up here.  Campbell will continue to try to duck this issue.
